Project team. Lighting design for the facade and public exterior areas.
The new AS Roma stadium will become a strong symbol for the city and a landmark, for which one of the first references is the ancient Roman Colosseum.
The stadium will have a maximum capacity of 60,000 seats, able to host international competitions and major entertainment events and it is the main feature of a larger mixed-use development that includes training and wellness facilities, retail, restaurants and bars.
A stone scrim is a mediator between outdoor city space and the interior 'sacred space' of games, concerts and other events. It is in this intermediate space that the proposed lighting concept creates a contextual scenario for action. Outside the perimeter of the building, the audience experiences a great pulsing of brightness and shadow. This rhythmic effect is connected to real time events in the interior of the stadium. The support of safe and intuitive accessibility are also key features of the concept and lighting performs an orientation function, emphasizing traffic flows and identifying focal points.
